Taraba lawmaker calls for aid to community after flooding — Premium Times Nigeria
In Nigeria, Taraba State lawmaker Abel Dia called for urgent assistance for residents of the Varvar community in the Sardauna Local Government Area after heavy rainfall. Water flooded homes, farmland, crops, and livestock. As Premium Times Nigeria reports, Dia represents the Mbamnga constituency.
Call for humanitarian assistance
The lawmaker appealed to government agencies, development partners, philanthropists, and other concerned Nigerians to provide humanitarian assistance and essential materials to affected families. According to him, the situation in Varvar is particularly alarming because most community residents earn their living through agriculture.
Dia noted that the destruction of fields and crops was a serious blow to affected households, as farmers had spent months of work and resources cultivating their crops. In his assessment, the loss of crops and land will create additional difficulties for families dependent on agricultural production.

Flood risk warning
Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency launched a flood preparedness campaign in Taraba in June for the 2026 rainy season. The agency urged local authorities and communities to take advance measures to protect lives and livelihoods, while residents of flood-prone communities were advised to heed early warnings and relocate to safer places when flooding is threatened.
The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency included Taraba among 15 states at high risk of river flooding from 19 to 25 September due to rising water levels in rivers. Dia also called on the authorities to implement long-term measures that would reduce the vulnerability of Varvar and neighboring communities to flooding.
During an assessment of the consequences of the 2024 floods, the International Organization for Migration, together with Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency, the Taraba State Emergency Management Agency, and the Nigerian Red Cross, identified 32,319 affected people in 7,349 households across seven local government areas of Taraba State.
