US Secretary of State Rubio calls Cuba a failed state — Anadolu Agency
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Cuba has already “fallen,” calling it a state with an economy and system of government that, in his view, do not function properly. He said this in an interview with Fox News, Anadolu Agency reports.
Statement on the economy and government
According to Rubio, Cuba’s economy does not function, and the country is governed by people who, in his view, continue to preach a revolution that “died 20 years ago.” He stated that Cuba’s political model has failed to provide either a functioning economy or an effective government.
“The problem with Cuba right now is that it is a failed state in every sense of the word,” the US secretary of state said. He also stated that neither the government nor the country itself functions properly.

Migration and the need for change
Rubio cited migration from Cuba as evidence of economic hardship. According to him, nearly 20% of the population has left the country since 2021, which he called the result of a “complete failure.”
The US secretary of state expressed hope that Cuba would choose a different path. In his view, economic reforms alone would not be enough: economic freedom is impossible without political freedom, and these changes must take place at least simultaneously and will require a transition period.
