Ten countries in the Americas condemn actions linked to Iran — Jerusalem Post

Ten countries in the Americas, in a joint statement, condemned actions linked to Iran and its proxies, including the alleged planning of deadly attacks, illicit fundraising, political interference and activities aimed at strengthening terrorist networks. The statement was signed on October 5 by the United States, Argentina, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, and Trinidad and Tobago, The Jerusalem Post reports.

In the statement, the countries said they intended to protect their nations and populations from such threats and called on the Islamic Republic of Iran and groups affiliated with it to cease the relevant activities. In the author's view, this declaration indicates a more coordinated regional position regarding Iranian influence in Latin America.

Statement by 56 countries on UN restrictions

Three days earlier, 56 countries reaffirmed their commitment to comply with UN restrictions on Iran that were reinstated last year. The signatories included the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Bahrain, Morocco, Japan, South Korea, Colombia, Argentina, Paraguay, and Yemen.

The participants in the statement pledged to prevent transfers that could contribute to Iran's nuclear, missile, drone, and arms programs, as well as to strengthen cooperation to counter Iran's proliferation of the relevant technologies.

Steps by Colombia and Europe

On September 19, Colombia officially severed diplomatic relations with Iran. As the publication notes, Bogotá cited, among other grounds, Tehran's alleged ties to terrorist and drug-crime groups, human rights violations, attacks on countries outside the conflict, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, and obstruction of the work of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Several days later, Colombia designated the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist organization and announced measures to prevent individuals linked to it from entering the country. In February, the European Union added the IRGC to its terrorist list, froze its assets, and prohibited EU operators from providing it with funds. In July, the United Kingdom also took measures against the structure under new legislation on threats from states.

At the same time, Iran maintains important relations with Russia and China, while Qatar continues to mediate between the United States and Tehran. The article emphasizes that the signatories of the joint statements have different motives, ranging from nuclear non-proliferation and counterterrorism to protecting maritime security, human rights, and their own territory.
