Reports on conditions aboard
During the lengthy deployment, reports emerged of stress among the crew, mental health problems, and shortages of food and hygiene supplies. Democratic Representative Sarah Jacobs of California said that she recently visited the ship and spoke with sailors and Marines. According to her, they described difficulties with doing laundry, obtaining medication and medical care, as well as food shortages.
US President Donald Trump had previously downplayed these reports. In August, he said that the sailors had been at sea for a long time, adding that military personnel had previously been deployed for longer periods.
