Moldova is demanding the complete withdrawal of Russian troops from Transnistria

Moldova will continue to insist on the complete withdrawal of Russian troops from the unrecognized region of Transnistria. This was stated by Valeriu Kiveri, Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration. He commented on a statement by the Russian Embassy regarding remarks made by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas.

Kallas noted that “Transnistria will not be an obstacle on Moldova’s path to Europe.” The Russian Embassy in Moldova stated that “Brussels is effectively agreeing to the presence of Russian troops on EU territory.”

Kiveri explained that “the illegal presence of Russian troops cannot become legal due to a misinterpretation of the EU’s statement.”

Brussels’ very positive statement was misinterpreted and turned into propaganda by those who continue to advocate for a Russian military presence on Moldovan territory. On the contrary, Brussels stated that the current situation is not recognized, and that the Republic of Moldova’s progress toward European integration will create a stable and far more attractive foundation for the country’s reintegration,” the deputy prime minister emphasized.

He also reminded that Russia’s military presence should not be confused with a peacekeeping operation, as there is no legal basis for the presence of the Russian contingent on the territory of the Republic of Moldova.

I would like to remind those who support the presence of Russian troops of Russia’s 1999 commitments in Istanbul (regarding the withdrawal of troops from Transnistria) and to refute yet another misconception. They are attempting to lump the Russian military presence into a single category and justify it with the 1992 agreement (on the principles of the armed conflict in the so-called Transnistrian settlement). The peacekeeping mission consists of two components; it has transformed from a peacekeeping mission into a separation mission and is not fulfilling its mandate in good faith, and is present on the territory of the Republic of Moldova on the basis of the 1992 agreement, just like the military presence of the GOTR operational group, which has no legal basis,” Kiveri added.
