The diplomatic conflict between Russia and Moldova has escalated
A new diplomatic scandal has erupted in Chisinau between Russia and Moldova following an incident at the airport, where the Russian side alleged that diplomatic mail had been blocked. The Moldovan Foreign Ministry categorically rejects these accusations and says that no illegal actions were taken against the couriers. The situation has already escalated into an exchange of mutual statements.
The Russian Embassy in Moldova stated that its diplomatic couriers were allegedly detained without cause by border guards at Chisinau Airport and that the guards demanded to inspect the diplomatic mail and even their cell phones.
The Russian diplomatic mission claims that it notified the Moldovan side in advance of the couriers’ arrival, yet they were still subjected to inspections that they consider unlawful. “The Moldovan side is returning to its own destructive practice of blocking diplomatic mail, which has no parallel anywhere in the world,” the Russian Embassy stated.
The Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs denied these accusations, emphasizing that border guards acted within their authority and did not interfere with diplomatic mail.
According to Chisinau, there were no detentions of couriers, nor was there any inspection of cargo, as claimed by the Russian side. They also emphasized that Moscow is once again selectively interpreting the norms of international law. “We regret that the Russian side is once again selectively citing the norms of international law,” the Moldovan Foreign Ministry noted.
The incident marks yet another episode in the tense relations between the two countries, where any recent contacts have regularly been accompanied by mutual accusations and diplomatic disputes. This was reported by Newsmaker.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the international community should be more concerned about the alleged possible “annexation” of Moldova by Romania than about Russia’s occupation of Ukrainian territories.
