Poland has extended its ban on accepting asylum applications at the border with Belarus

Poland has extended its ban on accepting asylum applications at the border with Belarus

Poland plans to extend the ban on submitting applications for international protection at the border with Belarus for another 60 days. The government explains this by noting that migratory pressure has not ceased, and that Minsk continues to use illegal migration as a tool of influence. At the same time, exceptions will remain in place for certain categories of people.

The Polish government has already prepared a draft resolution that provides for the extension of the current restrictions for another two months. If the document is adopted, the new period will take effect on July 20 and last for the next 60 days. Poland first introduced such a ban on March 27, 2025. It concerns the acceptance of applications for international protection from people crossing the Belarusian-Polish border.

Warsaw believes there are currently no grounds for lifting the restrictions. The government states that Belarus continues to use illegal migration as a tool of hybrid pressure against Poland and the European Union. That is why the authorities insist on extending the ban. At the same time, the restrictions are not absolute. Polish border guards may make exceptions for people in particularly vulnerable situations.

This includes, in particular, unaccompanied minors, pregnant women, people with serious illnesses, or those who face immediate danger upon returning to their home country. In such cases, applications for international protection may be accepted.

The Polish government emphasizes that these rules are necessary to protect the state border and the country’s security. According to Polish authorities, the current situation on the eastern border remains complex and requires strict measures. At the same time, not everyone supports this decision. Polish human rights and civil society organizations have repeatedly spoken out against these restrictions. They believe that the ban violates the Polish Constitution, as well as the country’s international obligations to protect people seeking asylum.

Despite the criticism, the government does not plan to abandon its policy. If the relevant resolution is adopted, the ban on submitting applications for international protection at the border with Belarus will remain in effect at least until the second half of September, according to the Polish news outlet RMF24.

Poland will cooperate with Ukraine on the production and maintenance of PAC-3 missiles for the Patriot systems following the signing of a multilateral agreement with the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden to establish a maintenance center for these missiles in Europe.

Trump stated that the U.S. may allow Ukraine to manufacture missiles for the Patriot system.

As a reminder, U.S. President Donald Trump criticized Spain ahead of the NATO summit in Ankara, stating his intention to sever trade relations and halt visits between the two countries.

Before the start of the NATO summit in Ankara, U.S. President Donald Trump once again accused allies of underfunding the Alliance, while praising the work of NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
