A monument to Romanian legionnaires from the Franco era is being dismantled in Spain

The Spanish government has decided to dismantle the monument to Romanian legionnaires in the Madrid suburb of Mahadaonda, deeming it contrary to the principles of democratic memory.

The monument has been added to the official list of monuments to be removed from public spaces. Along with it, three other monuments from the era of dictator Francisco Franco, located in Tenerife, Murcia, and Almería, will also be dismantled.

According to Ángel Víctor Torres, Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, the removal will be “an act of democratic dignity” and will prevent future generations from inheriting public spaces marked by symbols of the dictatorship.

The monument in Mahadaonda was unveiled in 1970 in honor of the leaders of the Romanian fascist organization “Iron Guard”— Ion Moți and Vasile Marina, who died in 1937 while fighting on Franco’s side during the Spanish Civil War.

The government emphasized that the “Iron Guard” espoused fascist, ultranationalist, and anti-Semitic views, collaborated with the Nazi regime, and was involved in numerous repressions in Romania. An expert commission concluded that the monument glorifies European fascist movements and the Francoist regime.
