Ukraine will continue the search for victims of the Volhynia tragedy

Ukraine has no plans to halt search operations for the graves of Polish victims of the Volhynia tragedy. Oleksandr Alferov, head of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance, stated that such efforts remain an important part of the historical dialogue between Ukraine and Poland.

According to him, Ukraine will continue to issue permits for the search and reburial of victims of these tragic events. Kyiv also looks forward to the opportunity to begin searching for Ukrainian victims in Poland.

Oleksandr Alferov emphasized that Ukraine recognizes the Volhynia tragedy and considers it necessary to continue the work of locating burial sites. “Regardless of existing disputes, this work must continue. A deadlock on the issue of exhumation and search operations serves neither dialogue nor Christian ethics,” said the head of the UINP.

He noted that the issue of the burial sites of the victims of the Volhynia tragedy must remain part of the dialogue between the two countries, despite the complex aspects of their relations. According to Alferov, the Ukrainian side is ready to continue cooperation in this area. At the same time, he expressed hope that the search for Ukrainian victims in two villages in Poland could begin as early as this year.

The Volhynia tragedy remains one of the most sensitive issues in Polish-Ukrainian historical relations. Both countries have repeatedly stated the need to clarify the circumstances of those events and to honor the memory of the victims in a dignified manner. He made these remarks in an interview with PAP.

On the National Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Volhynia Tragedy, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk addressed the public, calling on citizens to preserve historical memory, identify the names of all those who perished, and build a future based on truth and solidarity.
