The director of the U.S. National Counterterrorism Center resigned over his opposition to the war
Joe Kent, head of the U.S. National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC), has officially resigned, citing his disagreement with the military campaign against Iran.
In a statement addressed to the U.S. president and published on the X network, Kent emphasized that he cannot support a war he considers to be the result of pressure from external lobbying groups. According to him, Tehran did not pose an immediate threat to the United States, which started the war under the influence of the Israeli lobby, and the current hostilities contradict his convictions.
The National Counterterrorism Center is a key analytical body within the U.S. intelligence community, established after the September 11 attacks to coordinate intelligence agencies. While Russia hopes for a deepening of the political crisis within Washington, the resignation of an official of this rank indicates serious internal debates within the U.S. national security apparatus regarding the advisability of expanding the conflict in the Middle East. Kent, whose nomination for the position was approved by the president, became the first high-ranking representative of the intelligence community to publicly condemn the administration’s military actions against Iran. For now, the deputy director will serve as acting director until a new head is appointed.
As a reminder, Iran is facing defeat, even with possible Russian intervention.
Trump also explained why Iran has not yet surrendered.
