In the U.S., a marine scientist has collected more than 10 tons of oyster shells from restaurants to use them for restoring ocean reefs. What was usually thrown away has become the raw material for a major environmental project that helps restore coastal ecosystems, according to People.

U.S. marine scientist Keisha Kenny has turned ordinary restaurant waste into a resource that literally helps the ocean recover, and in just a few years, her initiative has grown so much that today we’re talking about over 10 tons of collected oyster shells that would previously have simply been sent to the trash.

As People reports, it all started quite modestly: the first batches of shells could fit into a few boxes, but it quickly became clear that the idea was working, and that much more material was needed for reef restoration than initially expected. Kenny serves as the director of marine restoration at Orange County Coastkeeper in Southern California, and together with her team, she is working to bring oyster reefs back to life, as these natural structures play a key role in the stability of coastal ecosystems.

To prevent the loss of this potentially valuable resource, activists have partnered with 15 restaurants and fish markets, from which they regularly collect used shells; instead of ending up in a landfill, these shells are processed and returned to the ocean as the foundation for new reefs.

The organization explains that oyster reefs act as natural water filters and as a habitat for many marine species, so their restoration directly impacts the health of the coastline, biodiversity, and even water quality.

According to Kenny, this work demonstrates that even ordinary food waste can become part of a larger ecological system if used correctly, and that what was once trash can literally help the ocean recover.

The U.S. and China agreed to mutually reduce tariffs on certain goods following talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing.

As a reminder, Trump arrivedin China for the first time in nearly a decade.

Donald Trump is heading to China for talks with Xi Jinping, where the two sides plan to discuss trade, energy, and Taiwan, against the backdrop of a tense global situation.
