A backup heating system is being developed for one of Kyiv's districts

The Recovery Agency has begun work on an alternative heating project for the heating district served by one of the capital’s thermal power plants. The new system is intended to protect residents from the consequences of potential Russian strikes on critical infrastructure.

This was reported by the head of the state agency, Serhiy Sukhomlyn, on Telegram. He held a meeting with engineers and scientists regarding the implementation of technical solutions, such as cogeneration and backup power. Experts have already calculated the necessary reserve capacity to ensure a stable heat supply in the event of a failure of the main power plants.

Creating alternatives to large thermal power plants is a priority task ahead of the start of the next heating season. The project is being implemented at the request of the Coordination Center for the Implementation of Resilience Plans. Authorities emphasize that large energy facilities remain primary targets for enemy missiles and drones. Experience from last winter confirmed the need to quickly reconnect consumers to autonomous energy sources. In addition to technical equipment, logistics for rapid emergency response were discussed. Currently, project documentation is being prepared and the necessary equipment is being sourced. Implementation of the plan should minimize the risks of prolonged heat outages in the capital.

Due to massive shelling by Russian occupiers, the capital’s thermal power plants have suffered significant damage. In particular, TPP-6 is 80% damaged, and TPP-4 has been completely destroyed

As a reminder, on the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal visited one of the capital’s CHP plants along with a delegation of high-ranking foreign guests.
