Orbán will head the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, but there’s a catch

Péter Magyar, leader of the Tisza Party, which won Hungary’s parliamentary elections, has nominated Anita Orbán for the position of foreign minister.

She has already accepted the offer, according to Telex. Previously, Anita Orbán worked for five years at the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where she handled energy security issues, and later served as Magyar’s advisor on international affairs.

During a press conference, Péter Magyar named six other future cabinet members, including candidates for the posts of ministers of finance, defense, health, and economy. Specifically, Romulusz Rusin-Szendy is set to head the Ministry of Defense, and András Karman the Ministry of Finance. The formation of the new cabinet is taking place amid preparations for the first session of the newly constituted parliament, scheduled for early May.

The Tisa Party won a decisive victory in the April 12 elections, securing 141 parliamentary seats. In contrast, the FIDESZ party, led by Viktor Orbán, who had headed the government for 16 years, won only 52 seats. The former prime minister called the result a shock and stated the need for a complete overhaul of his political force. The change of power in the country is taking place amid an expected review of Budapest’s foreign policy course and its relations with international partners, particularly regarding Russia.

The winner of the Hungarian elections, Péter Magyar, made a high-profile statement regarding the resumption of operations on the Druzhba oil pipeline and addressed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The politician emphasized that the issue of energy supply should not be subject to political pressure and called for the unblocking of Russian oil transit
