Up to 40 degrees — Europe is in for a hot end to September
Unusually warm weather is expected in many European countries in late September and early October. In some regions, temperatures may be 10–14 degrees higher than the average for this time of year, and in some places, temperatures will reach nearly 40 degrees.
A new wave of unusually warm weather may sweep across Europe in late September. The strongest warming is expected in the south of the continent, but the warm air will gradually spread to central and northern regions as well. According to meteorologists’ forecasts, this will be caused by the influx of warm air from North Africa and the Mediterranean. In some countries, temperatures may be 10–14 degrees higher than the long-term averages for late September.
The situation will be exacerbated by an area of high atmospheric pressure forming over Europe. It may trap warm air over the continent for several days. This phenomenon is often called a “heat dome.” Simply put, a stable high-pressure system settles over a specific area, preventing hot air from quickly leaving the region. As a result, temperatures may remain high for several days in a row.
Additionally, a strong southwesterly flow will carry heat over Europe. It will form between a low-pressure system over the Atlantic and a high-pressure system over Europe.
Where Will It Be Hottest?
The highest temperatures are forecast for the Iberian Peninsula, primarily in Spain and Portugal. In central and southern Spain, temperatures could rise to 35–38 degrees by the end of the week. In some places, temperatures may approach 40 degrees.
Severe heat is also expected in Portugal. There, temperatures in some areas may rise to 35–38 degrees. The warm air will then spread to France. In the southern and central parts of the country, maximum temperatures may be close to 35 degrees.
The heat will also reach northern parts of Europe. In the Benelux countries and in the north of the continent, temperatures in some places may rise to around 30 degrees. It will be unusually warm even in the United Kingdom. In the south and central parts of the country, temperatures may briefly reach around 25 degrees.
When the Heat Will Reach Central Europe
Warm air masses will begin to actively move into Central Europe starting this weekend. They may then move northeastward. Temperatures in Germany are expected to reach 27–29 degrees. For late September, these readings will be noticeably higher than usual. In northern Italy and Tuscany, as well as in the northern and central parts of the Balkans, temperatures may reach around 28–30 degrees.
Similar temperatures are forecast for Greece. For now, the forecast covers late September and the first few days of October. Based on current data, the warm air may linger in Europe into early next month before moving further north and east.
At the same time, specific temperature readings may still change as the forecast dates approach. Therefore, meteorologists will be able to provide a more accurate picture of the weather closer to the end of September. This is reported by Blikk.
In southeastern Australia, temperatures this weekend may exceed the seasonal average by 12°C following a sharp cold snap brought on by Antarctic air. The warmest air is coming from the country’s northwest and has already set dozens of temperature records in Western Australia, according to ABC News Australia.
