A British politician who sympathizes with Putin wants to visit Ukraine, according to Politico
Nigel Farage, leader of the British Reform Party, plans to visit Ukraine. Party officials hope the trip will help change perceptions of the politician, whom critics accuse of sympathizing with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
According to party officials, talks have already taken place between “Reform” and its Ukrainian partners regarding a possible visit by Farage.
The party expects that a visit to Ukraine will help the Reform leader demonstrate his own position on the war and partially dispel accusations of pro-Russian sympathies.
Critics of the British politician often cite his 2014 statement, in which Farage said he “respected” Putin as a “practical politician.”
Ten years later, during the general election, the politician once again found himself at the center of criticism. At that time, he claimed that it was the West that had “provoked” Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
These remarks have become one of the reasons Farage is regularly accused of being too lenient toward the Kremlin.
Farage’s reputation deteriorated further after the former leader of the Reform Party in Wales was jailed last year for accepting Russian bribes.
This incident fueled speculation about possible ties between Farage’s political circle and Russia.
At the same time, the results of a poll conducted last year by More in Common showed that British voters generally support Ukraine.
However, only 26% of those surveyed believe that Nigel Farage shares this view.
Another 21% of respondents believe that Farage is more sympathetic toward Russia.
Despite years of criticism, the party hopes that Nigel Farage’s visit to Ukraine will help at least partially change attitudes toward him.
For “Reform,” such a trip could be an opportunity to demonstrate to British and Ukrainian audiences the party’s true position on Ukraine and Russian aggression.
The date of Farage’s potential visit to Ukraine has not yet been announced.
