Taiwanese students rank highly in PISA 2025
In Taiwan, 15-year-old students ranked fourth in the world in science and mathematics and third in reading literacy in the PISA 2025 international assessment. The report was jointly released by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education and National Taiwan Normal University, Taipei Times reports.
Assessment results
In science, Taiwanese students scored 540 points, retaining fourth place in the global ranking. This matches Taiwan’s highest result in the subject, first recorded in 2022.
In reading literacy, Taiwan scored 508 points and rose from fifth to third place, its best result in this category. In mathematics, students scored 546 points and ranked fourth, falling one position compared with the previous assessment cycle.
For the first time, the study included an assessment of computational problem solving. Taiwanese participants ranked fifth in it, scoring 551 points.

Global trends
PISA 2025 covered more than 760,000 15-year-old students from 91 countries and economies. Science was the main assessment domain in this cycle, while reading and mathematics were supplementary domains. The programme is organized by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development; it assesses the knowledge and skills needed by 15-year-old students to participate effectively in society.
Among the 23 OECD countries that participated in both PISA 2022 and PISA 2025, the average science score fell by five points, reading by 16 points and mathematics by 11 points. Against this background, Taiwan’s science result rose by two points, while its reading and mathematics scores declined by seven and one point respectively.
Taiwan PISA project director Tsai Chin-chung said he had expected global results to recover after the COVID-19 pandemic, but the decline in student achievement worldwide continued. After the 2025 cycle, PISA will shift from a three-year to a four-year cycle.
