Police in Paju suspect at least three accomplices in woman’s death case
South Korean police suspect that at least three additional people may have been involved in the death of a woman whose frozen body was found last week in a freezer at a cafe in Paju, Gyeonggi Province. According to The Korea Herald, citing MBC and KBS, the cafe owner was arrested and taken into custody on Friday in connection with the woman’s death.
Suspected certificate scheme
According to media reports, investigators believe the cafe owner may have been part of a group that dealt in forged department store gift certificates and exchanged them for cash.
According to police, on September 3, the woman came to the cafe to discuss a gift certificate transaction. The owner allegedly led her into the freezer, saying that the certificates were stored there. The woman reportedly discovered that they were counterfeit, but the subsequent circumstances of her death are still being determined. In particular, investigators have not established whether she was killed in the freezer or left there to die.

Findings in the freezer
The woman’s body was found inside the chamber near the entrance. Fake gift certificates with a combined face value of tens of billions of won were also found there.
Law enforcement officers are establishing the role of every person who may have been connected to the case and are also checking whether the group may have committed other crimes. According to media reports, the freezer may have been installed recently in connection with the suspected scheme to sell counterfeit certificates.
During questioning, the cafe owner reportedly told police that the structure had been set up so that people could not thoroughly inspect the certificates. According to him, potential buyers could not stay inside for long because of the intense cold. MBC reported that photographs taken by a cafe visitor in April showed that the structure was not there at the site. Paju residents also told Newsis that they had not seen the container there as late as the end of August.
