House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries unveiled the “Fight for an Affordable America” initiative at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. He has made lowering the cost of living a central theme of the Democratic Party’s campaign ahead of the midterm elections, in which the party is seeking to regain control of the House of Representatives, according to Al Jazeera English.
Jeffries spoke in support of Democratic congressional candidate Bob Brooks in Pennsylvania’s 7th District. This is one of the districts currently controlled by Republicans that the Democrats are targeting. With 100 days to go before the election, Jeffries stated that working, law-abiding Americans should be able to lead a middle-class life—with a well-paying job, housing, health care, education for their children, and a retirement plan.
According to Jeffries, if the Democrats regain control of the House of Representatives, they will seek to lower the cost of groceries, gas, and housing, make health care more accessible, and protect Medicare and Social Security. He also promised to combat price gouging, push for a ban on stock trading by the president, the vice president, and members of Congress, and to release materials related to convicted American sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Jeffries accused President Donald Trump and Republicans of driving up Americans’ everyday expenses. He also stated that the Trump administration is providing tax breaks to billionaire donors at the expense of Medicaid. Separately, the Democrat criticized Trump’s actions regarding Iran, calling the war in Iran the president’s “reckless war of choice.”
According to U.S. government data cited by Al Jazeera, food prices have risen by 33% since the beginning of 2019. A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted in May showed that 74% of Americans believed the cost of living was heading in the wrong direction, and 73% disapproved of Trump’s actions in this area.
