An environmental activist claimed responsibility for an act of sabotage in Germany
An unknown radical environmental activist has claimed responsibility for a sabotage attack on a power substation in the German state of Brandenburg.
According to the Tageszeitung, on September 3, the newspaper’s editorial office received a letter from a man claiming to have carried out the attack. The letter was sent from North Rhine-Westphalia.
The author explained his actions as part of the fight against the use of fossil fuels. According to him, generating electricity from such sources is a crime that causes widespread suffering, and he allegedly tried to prevent it.
The man also stated that he acted alone. However, German police have not yet confirmed his involvement in the sabotage and are verifying the authenticity of the letter.
The incident occurred near the Turnow-Preilack substation, close to the Jänschwalde power plant. More than 20 homemade devices were discovered at the site, which were used in an attempt to cause short circuits on high-voltage power lines. In two cases, the attempt was successful, but it did not result in a large-scale power outage.
Previously, German law enforcement officials had not ruled out various theories regarding the origin of the attack, including the involvement of a foreign state or radical left-wing extremists. The investigation is ongoing.
