Former MP Fuseini says EOCO should have obtained a court warrant — MyJoyOnline

In Ghana, former Member of Parliament Inusah Fuseini criticised an attempt by officers of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to detain the Member of Parliament for the Manhyia South constituency, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, on the premises of the High Court in Accra. In Fuseini's view, the agency should first have obtained a court warrant.

Criticism of EOCO's actions

According to MyJoyOnline, Fuseini described EOCO's approach as problematic. He believes the agency could have applied to the court for a warrant and used parliamentary procedure to require the MP to appear before EOCO.

The former parliamentarian also mentioned the first contact between an EOCO representative and Baffour Awuah. According to him, the official behaved politely, properly and respectfully, which, in his opinion, indicated that confrontation could have been avoided.

Proposal on procedure

Fuseini said EOCO should have obtained a court warrant and served it on the MP through the Speaker of Parliament. In his assessment, this would have been a more appropriate way to ensure Baffour Awuah's appearance before the agency.

The incident between the Manhyia South MP and EOCO officers occurred at the High Court in Accra on Wednesday, 23 September. It prompted public discussion of EOCO's powers and the procedures used when a serving Member of Parliament needs to be involved in an investigation.
