Former Georgian Defense Minister Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison
Former Defense Minister Juansher Burchuladze was sentenced to 10 years in prison. The court found him guilty of abuse of office and money laundering. Several other defendants in the case were also sentenced, according to SOVA.
Judge Irakli Khuskvadze found not only Burchuladze guilty, but also his former deputy Giorgi Khaindrava, his relative Vasil Mkheidze, and former Defense Ministry official Vladimir Gudushauri.
Burchuladze was sentenced to 10 years in prison. In addition, the court ordered the confiscation of his property—including a house and land in Spain, as well as real estate in the Georgian village of Tskneti. He was also barred from holding public office for two years after serving his sentence.
His former deputy, Khaindrava, received an 8-year prison sentence and the same ban on working in government agencies. Mkheidze was also sentenced to 8 years. His property, which was presented as evidence in the case, was additionally confiscated. The situation is different for Gudushauri. He entered into a plea agreement with the prosecution, pleaded guilty, and received a suspended sentence of 4 years. He was also fined 10,000 lari and barred from holding office for one year. Following this, the court lifted the seizure of his property.
Before announcing the verdict, the judge addressed him during the hearing, which was held remotely. He confirmed that he admitted his guilt.
The case against Burchuladze was heard under charges of abuse of office and money laundering. Under Georgian law, such crimes carry a sentence of 9 to 12 years in prison. Other defendants were charged with embezzlement on a particularly large scale, as well as aiding and abetting these acts.
At the time of the verdict, there was no public reaction from Burchuladze himself or his defense team. In accordance with general principles of law, the verdict may be appealed in accordance with the procedure established by law.
