Sturmer's former deputy acquitted in tax error case — Politico
Former British Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner has been officially cleared following a lengthy tax investigation.
Politico reports this.
The UK tax authority HMRC has concluded an investigation that began last fall over suspicions of unpaid property tax.
This decision was a strategic victory for the politician, as it removed the main obstacle to her future career.
For a long time, the British media viewed this investigation as a factor that could prevent her from leading the Labour Party in the future.
Reiner stated that tax officials found her actions to be entirely legal and transparent.
According to her, experts concluded that she “did not attempt to evade taxes” and “was not negligent in her actions” during the financial transactions.
Reiner’s exoneration has intensified discussions within the party regarding a possible leadership change.
Numerous sources within the Labour Party consider her a sufficiently influential figure capable of openly challenging current leader Keir Starmer in the near future.
The former government minister herself is currently maintaining a cautious but confident stance regarding her political ambitions.
Responding to questions from journalists, she refused to rule out the possibility of running for the position of the future leader of the Labour Party.
“I want us to come together. I have said that we need to do better, and that we all need to make an effort toward that, and I will do everything in my power to make that happen,” Reiner emphasized in a statement to the press.
Starmer stated that he does not plan to resign as party leader
As a reminder, Starmer refusedto resign following Labour’s defeat.
Already, 41 Labour Party MPs have publicly called on British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to step down as party leader.
Earlier, Starmer spoke of growing tensions in relations with the U.S.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, during which they discussed increasing pressure on the aggressor. The leaders paid particular attention to the fight against the Russian shadow fleet and London’s contributions to the PURL program to strengthen the Ukrainian army.
