Yemen seeks support to overcome humanitarian crisis — Asharq Al-Awsat
Yemen’s Foreign Minister Afrah Al-Zouba, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, United States, called on international partners to urgently support healthcare, food security and the country’s recovery. According to Asharq Al-Awsat, the United Kingdom also announced £10 million in emergency aid in response to the UN humanitarian appeal for Yemen.
Medical assistance and displacement
At an event organized by UNICEF, Al-Zouba said that the authorities are simultaneously trying to provide essential medical services, medicines and vaccines and respond to the growing needs of people forced to leave their homes because of the latest escalation. According to her, thousands of civilians have fled their homes, while some families have been forced to relocate for the third or fourth time.
The minister also claimed that the actions of the Houthis are hindering the delivery of vaccines to children in territories under the group’s control, although the doses are available for distribution. She added that the detention of medical workers involved in child immunization campaigns jeopardizes disease prevention.
According to Al-Zouba, Yemen’s Ministry of Health is preparing a national strategy for 2026–2030. It is to cover primary healthcare, maternal and child health, nutrition, vaccination and strengthening the healthcare system’s resilience to crises.

Food assistance and recovery
During a meeting with UN World Food Programme Acting Executive Director Carl Skau, Al-Zouba discussed food security and the needs of displaced and conflict-affected communities. She stressed the need for safe, regular and unhindered delivery of food and humanitarian aid. The Yemeni government also reported violations affecting civilians, camps for displaced people and humanitarian facilities, as well as the theft of food and medical supplies.
Carl Skau confirmed that the World Food Programme would continue supporting Yemen’s population and coordinating with the government and partners to strengthen food security. At a meeting with International Committee of the Red Cross President Mirjana Spoljaric Egger, the minister called for intensified efforts to gain access to people detained by the Houthis and assess their conditions of detention.
Separately, Al-Zouba discussed infrastructure, basic services and recovery projects with Jorge Moreira da Silva, Executive Director of the UN Office for Project Services. According to the UK government, British funding will be directed toward food and nutrition support, emergency medical assistance and vaccines for people displaced or affected by the latest escalation.
