Emmanuel Samani to run for GAMLS general secretary
Ghanaian medical laboratory diagnostics specialist, journalist and presenter Dr. Emmanuel Raphael Samani has announced his intention to run for general secretary of the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS) for the 2026–2028 term. The election is scheduled for November 6, 2026, during the association’s National Congress.
According to MyJoyOnline, Samani intends to make the association more visible, responsive and influential in decision-making concerning the medical laboratory science profession. In his view, the important role of these specialists in patient care should be accompanied by greater influence on policy and institutional decisions.
Proposed changes
Samani believes that the general secretary should not only maintain records and coordinate correspondence, but also serve as the operational center of the professional association. His proposals include a 72-hour response rule for issues concerning organization members, a digital membership register and transparent reporting on membership dues.

The candidate also proposes introducing a permanent engagement calendar with Ghana’s Ministry of Health, the Ghana Health Service, the parliamentary Health Committee and the professional regulator. His plan for the first 100 days includes an audit of the secretariat’s documentation, tracking the implementation of congress decisions and a written report to association members at the end of this period.
Candidate’s experience
Samani has nearly a decade of laboratory practice experience in hematology and clinical chemistry and currently works at the Ghana Armed Forces Critical Care and Emergency Hospital. He is also a JoyNews presenter and was previously a finalist for the BBC World News Komla Dumor Award.
During a recent dispute between laboratory medicine physicians and medical laboratory scientists, Samani organized and moderated a discussion on leadership in the laboratory field. According to him, it was listened to live by about 1,700 people, while the recording was played more than 2,000 times. Samani said he seeks to strengthen GAMLS as an institution whose effectiveness will not depend on a single leader.
