The EU is preparing a large-scale operation to combat wildfires in 2026

The EU is preparing a large-scale operation to combat wildfires in 2026

The European Union is preparing one of the largest forest fire prevention programs in history to better respond to risks during the summer of 2026. This involves a large-scale deployment of firefighters, aircraft, and experts to countries where the risk of wildfires is highest.

Europe is preparing for another challenging summer season, which is forecast to bring new large-scale wildfires. That is why the European Commission is launching an expanded civil protection mechanism, which involves mobilizing a record number of resources for rapid response to emergencies.

As part of the program, 777 firefighters from 14 EU countries are set to be deployed to various regions of Europe, where they will be stationed in high-risk areas—specifically in Greece, Italy, Spain, France, Portugal, and Cyprus. This is the largest preemptive deployment of forces since the program’s launch in 2022, reflecting the growing threat of wildfires in the region.

In addition to ground forces, the European Union is also preparing significant aerial support: 22 firefighting aircraft and 5 helicopters will be available, which can be rapidly deployed to extinguish fires where the situation is getting out of control. Officials in Brussels emphasize that strengthening these capabilities is a response to the trend toward longer and more destructive fire seasons. “As wildfire seasons are becoming longer, starting earlier, and more destructive, the European Commission is ensuring that additional firefighters, aircraft, and experts are ready to support national services when and where the risk is highest,” the European Commission’s statement notes.

The EU Emergency Response Center, which operates around the clock and monitors risks using meteorological and scientific data, will play a key role in coordination. Satellite systems will also be integrated into the process, enabling real-time analysis of the situation and assisting with on-the-ground decision-making.

Separately, the EU plans to strengthen its infrastructure: in 2026, a new European regional fire station is set to open in Cyprus, which will serve as a base for aircraft and a training center for civil protection specialists. The facility will also host training for rescue workers and facilitate the exchange of expertise among participating countries.

Thus, Europe is effectively preparing for what could be one of the most challenging fire seasons, relying on rapid coordination, aviation, and joint action by member states. This was reported to journalists by the European Commission’s press service.

As a result of 1,821 fires in Ukrainian ecosystems, the flames destroyed approximately 2,250 hectares of land.
