Rubio stated that Iran has agreed for the first time to discuss its nuclear program

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reported progress in negotiations with Iran, stating that Tehran has agreed for the first time to discuss certain aspects of its nuclear program.

According to Rubio, new opportunities are now opening up for the diplomatic process that did not exist before.

“We are seeing a prospect—it could happen today, tomorrow, or next week—that for the first time, at least in my memory, they have agreed to discuss aspects of their nuclear program that just a month or a year ago they wouldn’t even mention,” the U.S. Secretary of State said.

At the same time, Rubio noted that the negotiation process is complicated by the structure of Iran’s leadership. According to him, due to the “somewhat fragmented” nature of the government, it may take several days to receive responses from the Iranian side.

The Secretary of State did not specify exactly which elements of the nuclear program the new consultations concern, but emphasized that the very fact of Iran’s willingness to engage in such discussions is an important breakthrough in the dialogue between the parties.
