The EU and Mexico are entering a new phase of trade

The European Union and Mexico have signed a revised trade agreement designed to streamline trade between the two parties and open new markets for business. The agreement was signed in Mexico City during the EU–Mexico summit, according to Euronews.

The European Union and Mexico have officially signed a revised trade agreement. The ceremony took place on May 22 in Mexico City, the capital of Mexico.

The document was signed by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President António Costa, and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. Officials in Brussels are calling this agreement an important step toward strengthening economic ties between Europe and Latin America. “The EU and Mexico are committed to a close strategic partnership. Today’s modernized agreements define our shared vision for the future and will bring many benefits to both sides,” said Ursula von der Leyen.

The new agreement effectively updates the rules of cooperation that have been in place since the early 2000s. The previous agreement had already removed most tariff barriers, but now the parties want to go even further and make trade simpler and faster.

The EU will gain broader access to the Mexican market for agricultural products, medicines, and industrial equipment. This includes, in particular, pork, dairy products, grains, fruits, and pasta. At the same time, Mexico will be able to more actively sell coffee, chocolate, fruits, and agave syrup to Europe.

A separate provision of the agreement concerns so-called geographical indications—names of products associated with a specific region. For example, these could be specific types of cheese, wine, or other traditional goods.

Under the new rules, 568 European and 26 Mexican products will receive protection. The agreement also opens up new opportunities for companies to participate in public procurement on both sides of the Atlantic.

The European Commission emphasizes that Mexico is one of the EU’s key partners in Latin America. Today, it ranks second among the EU’s trading partners in the region. At the same time, for Mexico itself, the EU is the second-largest export market after the United States.

According to the European Commission, the volume of trade in goods between the parties in 2025 has already reached nearly 87 billion euros. Trade in services in 2024 amounted to nearly 30 billion euros.

Brussels hopes that the new agreement will help further increase these figures and make economic ties between Europe and Mexico more stable amid global competition and trade risks.

Two sailboats from the Nuestra America Convoy, an international humanitarian convoy that went missing while transporting aid from Mexico to Cuba, were found by the Mexican Navy.

The elimination of Mexico’s most wanted criminal, the leader of the New Generation Jalisco Cartel (CJNG) nicknamed “El Mencho,” was accompanied by an unprecedented cyberattack.
