People have been detained in Turkey in connection with the main opposition party

In Turkey, 13 people have been detained in connection with the 2023 convention of the main opposition party, the CHP. Law enforcement officials allege possible irregularities during the delegates’ voting and financial fraud.

In Turkey, law enforcement conducted a large-scale operation in a case related to the congress of the Republican People’s Party (CHP)—the country’s main opposition force. According to Reuters, police detained 13 people across seven provinces.

The investigation concerns the party convention held in 2023. It was then that the CHP leadership changed, and Özgür Özal became the new leader. Now, the Istanbul prosecutor’s office claims that there may have been violations during the delegates’ voting. Among the allegations are interference in the voting process, possible bribery, and money laundering.

The prosecutor’s office says the detainees are suspected of “violating the law on political parties” as well as financial crimes. The situation surrounding the CHP has only escalated in recent days. This week, a Turkish court ruled to remove Özgür Özeli from his position as party leader. This has sparked a new wave of political tension in the country.

The opposition is already claiming pressure from the authorities. CHP representatives believe the case is politically motivated and linked to attempts to weaken one of the main forces critical of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Official Ankara has so far rejected accusations of political persecution. The authorities insist that this is merely an investigation into possible violations of the law.

Reuters notes that the situation surrounding the CHP has become yet another episode in a major political conflict in Turkey, where the confrontation between the government and the opposition has only intensified in recent years.

Ozgur Ozel himself has not yet publicly commented on the new arrests. At the same time, the party says it will continue its work despite the pressure and legal proceedings. “We will not back down in the face of political pressure,” CHP representatives stated earlier following court rulings regarding the party leadership.

Against this backdrop, Turkish media are already reporting on the risk of a new political crisis, as the CHP remains the country’s largest opposition force and one of the main rivals to the current government.
