Lithuania is searching the area following a possible drone incursion

A large-scale search is underway in Lithuania for possible debris from a drone that may have crashed within the country’s borders. The military and other agencies are surveying several areas simultaneously and interviewing local residents, according to LRT.

Searches for potential drone debris are underway in two regions of Lithuania—Utena and Panevėžys—according to LRT, citing the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

The operation involves the military police, army units, and the Lithuanian Riflemen’s Union. They are checking areas where so-called “stray” objects may have fallen. “Residents are being interviewed, and unmanned aerial vehicles are being used to survey various areas,” the Lithuanian Armed Forces Strategic Communications Directorate reported.

The military is using drones to more quickly survey hard-to-reach areas and check large territories where debris may have landed.

The incident occurred following the events of May 20, when a red air raid alert was declared in several eastern regions of Lithuania and in Vilnius due to a suspected drone intrusion into Lithuanian airspace.

At the time, the situation caused serious concern, as even the country’s leadership was forced to take shelter. It has not yet been officially confirmed what exactly entered Lithuanian airspace, but the military continues its investigation.

Law enforcement officials do not rule out that it could have been fragments of a drone or another foreign object that accidentally ended up in the country’s territory. Search operations are ongoing, and the situation remains under the control of the Lithuanian Defense Forces, who promise to provide additional information after completing the inspection of the areas.

Lithuania will also receive over a hundred air defense missiles from the U.S. following the State Department’s approval of the relevant agreement.
