The EU has no plans to appoint a representative for talks with Putin — DW

The European Union does not see a need for a special negotiator with Russia. According to DW, the EU will focus on developing a common strategy regarding possible peace talks with Russia.

Sources told the publication that currently, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas and key members of the bloc, including Germany, do not consider appointing a representative to be useful. According to them, the EU first wants to focus on strategy rather than personnel—that is, on which issues should be discussed with Russia.

Meanwhile, the EU continues to prepare new sanctions against Russia, as it does not believe that Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready for peace talks. According to dpa, on Thursday the European Commission and the EU’s diplomatic service will present member states with proposals for a 21st package of sanctions targeting the Russian financial sector and defense industry suppliers.

As a reminder, Finland anticipates a lengthy process of engaging Europe in negotiations with Russia.
