The EU plans to end temporary protection for Ukrainian men of draft age — Euractiv
The Council of the European Union has begun discussions on the possible withdrawal of temporary protection status for Ukrainian men of draft age after March 2027.
This was reported by Euractiv.
These changes could affect two categories of citizens arriving in European countries.
Currently, the EU’s Temporary Protection Directive (TPD) applies to all refugees from Ukraine without exception.
Thanks to this instrument, over four million people have obtained the legal right to live and work in EU countries without undergoing lengthy standard procedures.
The solidarity scheme was activated at the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022, and its validity was subsequently officially extended until March 2027.
According to an internal EU Council document obtained by journalists, European officials are considering narrowing the scope of the directive.
The proposed restrictions would be implemented by “excluding men of conscription age” or those who left Ukraine illegally.
If these changes are adopted, any new rules and restrictions will apply exclusively to future applicants seeking asylum for the first time.
A number of European governments have expressed serious concern that the proportion of men subject to military service is rapidly increasing among recent arrivals.
The official document notes that several countries consider it necessary to revise the system “also in the interests of Ukraine.”
According to foreign partners, such a step is important both for maintaining the country’s defense capabilities and in view of the future reconstruction of destroyed infrastructure.
