EU Expands Sanctions Against Iran — Callas

EU foreign ministers have agreed to tighten sanctions against Iran in response to restrictions on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

The EU’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, stated that the decision was made during a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg.

According to her, the European Union intends to expand the sanctions regime to include individuals responsible for violating freedom of navigation.

Kallas emphasized that freedom of navigation is a matter of principle and “is not up for debate.” She also criticized the situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, where, in her words, daily changes regarding its opening or closing are irresponsible.

The EU stressed that transit through the strait must remain free.

Diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict between the U.S. and Iran are at risk of collapse due to the American leader’s public actions.
