In Romania, the culture minister has resigned following controversial remarks

Romania’s acting Minister of Culture, András István Demeter, announced his resignation on Monday via social media. The decision came after audio recordings of the official’s controversial remarks surfaced in the media, sparking public outcry and criticism due to his dismissive attitude toward the country’s national interests.

This was reported by Digi24.

Earlier, he had demanded that the recording be examined to confirm its authenticity. However, he received calls for his resignation from UDMR party chairman Hunor Kelemen and the leader of the UDMR parliamentary faction.

"I have never clung to my seat. When I deemed it right, I stepped down as theater director and radio station president, and I am doing the same now as I submit my resignation as minister to the prime minister’s office. Without hesitation," the former minister stated.

“Now, unlike in previous situations, I must also apologize for unintentionally causing turmoil and discord in our modern society, which is already fraught with tension and burdened by conflict. I apologize to those who feel offended and to those who feel betrayed," he added.

The resignation was prompted by a controversial audio recording. During a conversation with ministry staff, Demeter recalls an incident from 2012 when he was questioned by the Prosecutor General’s Office regarding the acquisition of “Radio Chisinau” by “Radio Romania.”

"I say: Ms. Prosecutor, you can play your games all you want, but if I get angry, I’ll leave right now, because we’re still on the Board of Directors—everyone else who voted for this money is still in Radio’s leadership—we’ll leave peacefully, inform the Russians, sell the radio station for 5 million (ed., euros), you will no longer have any alleged losses, the Romanian state will win, it will be profitable. I put my dick on the line for the national interests of the state, because I’m Hungarian! So you should erect a monument to me, because I did what you couldn’t manage to do,” the media quotes from the audio recording.
