The EU will eliminate tariffs on most goods from Armenia

The European Union plans to open its market to most Armenian exports and provide Yerevan with additional financial support. This was announced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen after a meeting with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Yerevan.

Under the initiative, the EU will allow duty-free imports of up to 80% of Armenian exports. The new rules are expected to cover fresh fruits, vegetables, plants, beverages, and spirits. For the decision to take effect, it must still be approved by the European Parliament and EU member states.

In addition to trade preferences, the European Union will allocate a €52 million aid package to Armenia and send experts to support economic reforms and adaptation to the new trade conditions.

Officials in Brussels note that these measures are intended to offset economic losses resulting from tensions in relations with Russia due to Armenia’s pro-European course. According to von der Leyen, the support package should help redirect a significant portion of Armenian exports from the Russian market to the European market.

Russia had previously imposed restrictions on a number of Armenia’s key export goods, including agricultural products, flowers, fish, and mineral water.

The day before, during a visit to Azerbaijan, von der Leyen also announced the allocation of 200 million euros in grants for the development of logistics infrastructure in the South Caucasus, which the EU views as an important transport corridor between Asia and Europe.

In addition, the European Commission officially confirmed that Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will make working visits to Azerbaijan and Armenia on July 1 and 2. The Commission also outlined the key objectives of the upcoming trips.

Von der Leyen mentioned a possible date for Montenegro’s accession to the EU.
