The EU has resumed cooperation with Syria following restrictions imposed in 2011

UA NEWS 11 May 2026 18:13
The EU has resumed cooperation with Syria following restrictions imposed in 2011

On May 11, the Council of the European Union decided to lift the partial suspension of the Cooperation Agreement between the European Union and Syria, which had been in effect since 2011. The restrictions were imposed in response to the repression carried out by Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Brussels has now announced the resumption of full cooperation with Damascus under this agreement.

This was reported by the EU Council.

This step sends a clear political signal of the EU’s readiness to resume cooperation with Syria and support the recovery of its economy.

The EU Council explained the decision by noting that following the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024 and the subsequent lifting of most economic sanctions in May 2025, “the conditions that justified the sanctions no longer exist.”

The decision is seen as part of the EU’s policy to support Syria’s political transition and economic recovery.

Brussels called this “an important step toward strengthening bilateral relations between the EU and Syria.”

The partial suspension of the Cooperation Agreement restricted imports of a number of Syrian goods, including oil, precious metals, and diamonds.

The EU Council approvedthe launch of a Special Tribunal on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.

Earlier, Finland joined the effort to establish the special tribunal against Russia.

Earlier, Austria officially confirmed its intention to join the Extended Partial Agreement on the Special Tribunal on Russia’s crime of aggression against Ukraine.

France has joined the agreement on the Special Tribunal on Russian aggression.
