The EU has called on Russia to acknowledge responsibility for the downing of Flight MH17

On the 12th anniversary of the crash of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, the European Union called on Russia to acknowledge its responsibility for shooting down the plane and to cooperate fully to ensure justice in this case.

This was stated in a declaration by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaia Kallas.

The European Union honored the memory of the 298 victims, including 80 children from 17 countries, and expressed its condolences to their families.

The statement also welcomed the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights and the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which had previously held Russia responsible for the downing of Flight MH17 and the deaths of all those on board.

In addition, the EU noted that the ECHR had concluded that Russia had violated the European Convention on Human Rights and would subsequently determine the amount of compensation for the violations committed.

The Hague court also found three suspects guilty of shooting down the Boeing 777. Igor Girkin (Strelkov), Sergei Dubinsky, and Leonid Kharchenko were sentenced to life in prison.

It should be noted that the Hague court also sought to question the commander of the 53rd Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade, stationed in Kursk. According to the prosecution, it was a missile from that brigade that shot down the passenger plane. However, Russia denied the court’s request.

The investigation into the downing of Flight MH17 is ongoing, and many others may yet find themselves in the dock.
