Estonia has promised Latvia support in combating illegal migration
During a two-day visit to Latvia, Estonian Minister of the Interior Igor Taro stated that his country is ready to support Latvia in its fight against illegal migration. He also familiarized himself with the border security situation along the Latvian-Belarusian border, according to “European Truth,” citing Delfi.
According to Taro, the situation with illegal border crossings is significantly more tense for Latvia than for Estonia, and countering such incidents has already become routine work for Latvian authorities.
“Latvia’s experience in countering malicious attacks is invaluable, and our police colleagues draw on it from time to time when we send our personnel to assist them in stopping particularly serious hostile initiatives. This cooperation will continue,” said the Estonian minister.
The meetings also focused on cooperation between Estonia and Latvia in the fight against organized crime and cross-border drug trafficking. Taro called Latvia one of Estonia’s most important partners in the field of security and emphasized the practical nature of the cooperation between the two countries’ law enforcement agencies.
Earlier, the interior ministers of Latvia and Lithuania signed a bilateral agreement on cooperation in the fight against crime. It is expected to help more effectively counter organized networks involved in the illegal smuggling of migrants.
