The European Commission has tightened oversight of ChatGPT

UA NEWS 31 August 2026 22:46
The European Commission has tightened oversight of ChatGPT

On Monday, August 31, the European Commission classified ChatGPT as a “very large search engine,” which means the service must comply with stricter security requirements.

The new decision calls for increased oversight of the platform’s operations and its compliance with European Union regulations.

In addition to ChatGPT, the European Commission has designated Reddit and Roblox as “very large online platforms.”

Under the Digital Services Act (DSA), these three services reached at least 45 million users in the EU in a single month and met the threshold for this designation. The companies now have four months to comply with the additional requirements.

Service providers must assess and mitigate systemic risks associated with their algorithms. This involves preventing the spread of illegal content, protecting users’ physical and mental health, and avoiding negative impacts on minors, electoral processes, and public safety.

The European Commission will be empowered to assess the functionality of these services and, where possible, any related systems.

“We continue to closely monitor developments in the digital environment and will not hesitate to designate anyplatform that meets the criteria for enhanced supervision under the Digital Services Act,” said Henna Wirkkunen, Executive Vice President for Technological Sovereignty, Security, and Democracy.

This is stated in a related press release.

OpenAI has launched a separate ChatGPT for teenagers.

OpenAI’s advertising business has reached an annual revenue run rate of $1 billion.
