Europe is ready for talks with the U.S. and Russia on the war in Ukraine, says Merz
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that Europe is ready to join negotiations between Ukraine, Russia, and the United States aimed at resolving the full-scale war unleashed by the Kremlin.
This was reported by DW.
During a conversation with journalists, Merz was asked about the possible role of former Chancellor Angela Merkel as a mediator in negotiations with Russia. In response, he did not give a direct assessment, emphasizing that Russia’s willingness to engage in dialogue is a key condition for any negotiations.
Merz stressed that, first and foremost, a cessation of hostilities is necessary, and only then can the format and mediators be discussed.
“So far, however, Russia has responded to every proposal for negotiations with even more brutal attacks, including on civilian infrastructure,” the German chancellor stated.
The European Union is discussing the possible appointment of a special mediator for contacts with Russia, and Angela Merkel is among the leading candidates. Mario Draghi and Alexander Stubb are also being considered, but no final decision has been made yet due to disagreements among diplomats.
Recall that Merkel is being considered as a potential mediator in negotiations between the EU and Russia.
Berlin has called theRussian Federation’s proposal regarding Schröder’s mediation a fiction.
