The European Parliament has lifted the immunity of four Polish MEPs
The European Parliament has voted to lift the parliamentary immunity of four Polish MEPs. Among them is Grzegorz Braun, leader of the "Confederation of the Polish Crown" party, who is known for his anti-Ukrainian and anti-Semitic statements.
This was reported by TVP.
In addition to the leader of the "Confederation of the Polish Crown," the European Parliament also lifted the immunity of Daniel Obaitek, Patryk Jaki (Law and Justice party), and Tomasz Buczek (Confederation).
Separate charges have been brought against each of the MEPs. Braun is accused of attempting to disrupt a ceremony in Jedwabne dedicated to honoring the memory of Polish Jews. At the time, the MEP blocked the road during the commemorative events.
The case against Obajtek concerns his giving false testimony. MP Jaki is accused of slandering a judge, and Buczek of violating the physical integrity of a woman from whom he forcibly took a megaphone.
The European Parliament’s decision paves the way for Polish prosecutors and courts to initiate legal proceedings against these lawmakers.
This step was taken following a recommendation from the European Parliament’s Committee on Legal Affairs, which stated that the cases against the lawmakers are of a criminal nature and are not politically motivated.
