The Romanian Parliament will consider a motion of no confidence in the government

The Social Democratic Party of Romania and the far-right AUR party have initiated a motion of no confidence against the government led by Ilie Bolojan.

According to Digi24, a vote of no confidence is scheduled in parliament for Tuesday, May 5, following the relevant debates. Opposition forces managed to gather the necessary number of signatures to bring this issue to a vote.

AUR leader Gheorghe Simion claims that the initiative was supported by 251 deputies, constituting a parliamentary majority. In addition to the main initiators, representatives of the POT and PACE parties, as well as a number of independent lawmakers, have joined the no-confidence motion. The political crisis intensified after the Social Democrats officially withdrew from the governing coalition this month.

The current government is attempting to maintain its position, but the opposition’s consolidation around the no-confidence vote poses a serious threat to its continued functioning. The final decision on the fate of Bolojan’s cabinet will depend on the results of next week’s vote.

In Romania, seven ministers from the Social Democratic Party simultaneously resigned following the party’s decision to withdraw its support for Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan.

Romanian President Nicușor Dan stated that despite the political situation, Romania remains on a pro-European course, and key state institutions continue to function stably.
