Passwork, a password manager popular in Europe, has been found to have ties to Russia and the FSB

The Spanish password manager Passwork Europe SL, used by dozens of European government and educational institutions, shares the same source code as its Russian counterpart, “Passwork.” 

The service was created by Russians Ilya Garakh and Andrey Pyankov from Arkhangelsk, who later restructured the business through a company in the UAE, and the rights to the software were purchased by a Spanish entrepreneur.

At the same time, the Russian version of “Passwork,” which serves Gazprom Neft and Russian defense enterprises, was certified by the FSTEC (an agency of the Russian Ministry of Defense) and the FSB, for which it granted them full access to its source code. This poses critical risks for European clients (including the German postal service, universities, and Irish government agencies), as Russian intelligence agencies have information about potential vulnerabilities in the software’s code.
