Cypriot farmers to hold protest over irrigation shutdown
Farmers and residents of the Chrysochous Valley in Cyprus plan to hold a protest on the Polis Chrysochous–Paphos road on September 13, 2026, over the suspension of irrigation. Participants are to gather at 10:30 near a petrol station on the main road along this route, Cyprus Mail reports.
Peaceful protest with tractors
The organisers described the planned demonstration as peaceful. Farmers and their tractors are to gather on the road to draw attention to a problem which, they say, still has no substantial and permanent solution.
Participants will demand immediate state intervention. They warn that the lack of irrigation could have irreversible consequences for agricultural production and the natural environment.

Demand for a permanent solution
According to the farmers, they have repeatedly appealed to the Water Development Department, the district administration and other competent authorities. However, the organisers claim that no permanent solution has been found to provide crops with the necessary water.
The Chrysochous Valley is one of Cyprus’ important agricultural areas, with crops and a green natural landscape. The organisers stress that the lack of irrigation threatens not only farmers’ income and survival, but also the valley’s natural environment. They are seeking a final, institutionally secured solution so that uncertainty over water supplies for agriculture does not recur every year.
