Venezuela’s opposition figure says ‘decisive hours’ ahead
Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia, whom the opposition and several countries recognize as the winner of the 2024 presidential election (although authorities declared Nicolás Maduro the victor), stated that the opposition is prepared to rebuild the nation.
“Venezuelans, these are decisive hours,” González wrote in Spanish in a post on X, reposting a message from opposition leader María Corina Machado calling on him to assume the presidency. “Know that we are ready for the great operation to rebuild our nation,” he added.
The statement comes at a critical juncture for Venezuela, as the opposition continues to demand recognition of the election results from the summer of 2024. González, a former diplomat who was forced to leave the country due to persecution, remains a key symbol of the struggle for democratic change alongside Machado, the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize laureate. The opposition is calling for an immediate transfer of power and the restoration of constitutional order.
The situation in the country remains highly tense, with millions of Venezuelans both inside and outside the country awaiting resolution to the political crisis that has persisted for over a year since the disputed elections.
