Mátyás announced that agreements had been reached between Ukraine and Hungary regarding national minorities
Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced that a comprehensive agreement had been reached with Ukraine regarding the Hungarian national minority. According to him, the parties were able to agree on key aspects that had long been the subject of debate.
On Wednesday, June 3, Magyar stated that his government had achieved “in three weeks” what former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and his team “could not do in ten years.”
“We have reached a comprehensive agreement with Ukraine on expanding the linguistic, educational, cultural, and political rights of the 100,000-strong Hungarian minority,” the Hungarian prime minister emphasized.
He noted that this agreement is the result of several weeks of intensive expert-level negotiations between Hungary and Ukraine, in which political organizations of the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia and churches also participated.
“I am very pleased that, on the eve of National Unity Day, I can announce that the Ukrainian government has committed to incorporating the agreed-upon measures into its legislative framework in the near future, thereby granting our compatriots in Transcarpathia much broader educational, cultural, linguistic, and political rights than those they have had until now,” Madyar stated.
According to him, these commitments by Ukraine “will also be reflected in its action plan regarding the European Union.”
“If this happens, the Hungarian government will support the opening of the first cluster of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession,” Madyar added on Facebook.
As a reminder, Mádor is ready to meet with Zelenskyy next week, but there is a condition.
The foreign ministers of Ukraine and Hungary, Andriy Sibiga and Anita Orbán, held their first in-person meeting on May 22. During the talks in Helsingborg, the parties agreed to hold a second round of expert-level consultations next week to further discuss bilateral issues.
Earlier, the Hungarian government commented on the massive attack by Russian drones on Zakarpattia, during which the region’s critical infrastructure was struck. Budapest described the situation in the border region as extremely alarming and announced that it was preparing urgent countermeasures.
