Finland Will Allow French Fighter Jets Armed with Nuclear Weapons to Fly Over Its Airspace — Bloomberg

Finland will join the French initiative on nuclear deterrence, which French President Emmanuel Macron is promoting among European allies amid the war in Ukraine and discussions about future security guarantees.

Under the agreement, Helsinki and Paris will hold consultations on nuclear doctrine, conduct joint exercises, and provide for the possibility of French strategic air forces being stationed in Finland.

Finnish Defense Minister Antti Hykkänen called the decision logical, given that Norway, Sweden, and Denmark have already joined the French initiative. France remains the only EU member state with its own nuclear arsenal.

At the same time, there are no plans for the permanent deployment of French nuclear weapons on Finnish territory. Finnish President Alexander Stubb emphasized that there will be no nuclear weapons in the country during peacetime.

According to him, participation in the program will allow Finland to better understand Paris’s approaches to using nuclear forces to deter a potential adversary. Stubb also expects a negative reaction from Russia, which has previously opposed the French nuclear initiative.
