Von der Leyen and Rutte discussed support for Ukraine and EU defense
In Brussels, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. The two discussed boosting defense production and continued support for Ukraine.
Von der Leyen made a statement to that effect on X.
“Today, together with the NATO Secretary General, we took stock of our joint efforts to strengthen European defense and continue supporting Ukraine,” she wrote.
The President of the European Commission noted that the parties discussed the upcoming NATO summit and how to increase defense industry production in Europe.
“We need to invest more, produce more, and do both faster,” she emphasized.
“With global security threats on the rise, we agreed to work closely together in the coming weeks to strengthen relations between the EU and NATO and prepare for a successful summit in Ankara,” she concluded.
Commenting on the meeting, Rutte wrote on X that efforts to protect critical infrastructure were also among the issues discussed.
“A stronger Europe means a stronger NATO,” Rutte emphasized.
