Ford Reinstated 300 Engineers Due to Artificial Intelligence Inefficiencies — Bloomberg

Ford has decided to bring back more than 300 employees to its production facilities who had previously been laid off as part of a strategy to implement artificial intelligence systems.

According to the BBC, full automation of processes did not live up to expectations, and the engineers’ practical experience proved indispensable for maintaining quality standards.

According to Bloomberg, most of the specialists who were invited back are experienced quality control inspectors.

Initially, company management planned to fully delegate their duties to algorithms, but the actual performance of the AI fell significantly short of projections.

Charles Pun, Ford’s vice president of vehicle engineering, candidly acknowledged that the company had significantly overestimated the capabilities of the latest technologies at this stage.

“Artificial intelligence is a fantastic tool, but it’s only as good as the information used to train it,” he noted.

The top executive emphasized that the company had mistakenly assumed that technical specifications and algorithms alone would ensure high product quality.

Despite installing about 900 smart cameras for automatic defect detection, the system was unable to match the efficiency of professional specialists.

The company has now concluded that automated systems require extensive training based on the practical experience of people who have spent years working on car manufacturing.

“We realized that to improve our automation, machine learning, and artificial intelligence tools, we need to have them trained by the most experienced specialists,” explained Charles Pun.

Employees returning to their workplaces will not only resume direct quality control but will also help refine the algorithms.

They will actively pass on their knowledge to younger colleagues, which will facilitate a harmonious blend of human experience and technological solutions.

This was reported by Bloomberg.
