France fined the owner of the tanker Tagor—which is part of Russia’s shadow fleet and was detained by the French Navy in late May in the Atlantic Ocean—1 million euros.
According to the prosecutor’s office, the vessel was penalized for flying an improper flag and refusing to comply with the French military’s orders. At the time of its detention, the tanker was flying the Cameroonian flag, but French authorities suspected it was a fake.
Previously, the Tagor had changed flags multiple times, using registrations from Madagascar, the Marshall Islands, and Panama, and was already subject to sanctions.
Once the administrative detention procedure is complete, the vessel’s detention will be lifted, and the tanker will be able to leave French territorial waters.
The European Union is considering adding about 20 additional tankers fromRussia’s shadow fleet to future restrictive measures aimed at reducing Moscow’s oil revenues. New sanctions are also planned to be extended to vessels transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) to prevent the Kremlin from creating a similar shadow fleet for LNG.
