Hegset refused to admit that he was wrong about Ukraine not having maps
U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hagset did not provide a direct answer to Democratic Congressman Adam Smith’s question regarding the Trump administration’s conclusion that Ukraine is incapable.
This was discussed during a hearing of the House Armed Services Committee.
During the exchange, Smith recalled statements made by representatives of the Donald Trump administration a year ago, according to which Ukraine allegedly “had no cards to play” and was forced to seek a deal with Russia. Hegset dismissed suggestions of errors in assessments, shifting the focus to criticism of the previous Biden administration for transferring hundreds of billions of dollars in military aid.
The Pentagon chief emphasized that President Trump seeks a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine, considering it beneficial for both sides. At the same time, the minister noted the courage of the Ukrainian people and expressed approval of the fact that European countries are currently paying for American weapons for Kyiv. The congressman’s attempts to obtain an analysis of the strategic vision of the situation over the past 14 months ended with Hegset’s general remarks about the financial responsibility of allies who are now purchasing weapons for Ukraine.
